In Monterrey and Chiapas Mexico/En Monterrey y en Chiapas Mexico

Last Monday I left my house early to go to DFW and catch a plane to Monterrey, Mexico.  I spoke at the Mount Sinai Baptist Church where Brother Hector Avila is the Pastor.  Pastor Avila started this church many years ago and had led this church to an outstanding growth.  The church now has a new auditorium which fits a good 700 people.  I had the honor of speaking with on of my heroes in the ministry, Pastor Alejandro Cordova from the Fundamental Baptist Church in Celaya, Guanajuato, Mexico.  I spoke there Monday night, Tuesday morning and night.  I also shared the pulpit with Pastor Azael Cocon from Campeche, Mexico.  Unfortunately his picture didn’t turn out.  On Wednesday morning I was taken to the airport in Monterrey to catch my flight to Tuxtla Gutierrez where I met Brother Teodoro Vera who pastors the Peniel Independent Fundamental Baptist Church in San Cristóbal de las Casas Chiapas, Mexico.  He has pastored this church for 22 years!  Pastor Vera was one of my Sunday School students in my college & career Sunday school class when I was the Spanish youth director at the First Baptist Church of Hammond, IN under the leadership of Dr. Jack Hyles and Dr. Elmer Fernandez.  It is a blessing to see men who at one time were under my teaching still serving God and doing His will.  This is what makes it worth it!

Our Fall Campaign begins/Nuestra Campaña de Otoño comienza

Last Sunday, October 2nd, began our annual “Harvest of Souls” fall campaign and as always, Dr. Wendell Evans, President Emeritus of Hyles-Anderson College, came to be our special guest speaker.  This is his 6th time in a row he and his wife come to be with us.  Our people not only anticipate their coming, but also enjoy hearing him preach.  He preached two great sermons for us that day.  His Sunday morning sermon on the goodness of God was a tremendous breath of fresh air for our people and he challenged us on Sunday night to do more for God.  We also had the privilege of having the Tom Sloan family, missionaries to Chiapas, Mexico in our service that morning.  They were just passing by and decided to visit our church.  I am glad missionaries know they can stop in our church any time they wish.  Some of our music groups sang that day and overall the Lord gave us a great Sunday with over 300 in attendance, 9 saved and 3 baptized.  Praise the Lord for His goodness!

Preaching in Panama/Predicando en Panama

On Monday, September 19th I left very early from my home to DFW to catch a flight to Miami, FL and from there to the country of Panama.  What a blessed trip this was for me and for many reasons.  I was very busy and preached many times while I was there, but it was also very productive and satisfying.  On that Monday I began a Revival Conference at the Lighthouse Fundamental Baptist Church in Panama City where one of our missionaries, Arnulfo Olivo, is the Pastor.  Pastor Olivo is doing a great job.  Under his leadership his church has grown from nothing to over 150 and they have started a second church also in the city.  The Lord gave us a blessed time those three nights.  Then on Thursday Pastor Olivo and his family drove me three hours to the city of Santiago where I preached a two night revival for another one of our missionaries, Pastor Roberto Maldonado and the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Santiago, Panama.  Pastor Maldonado has been pastoring this church for only seven months.  This church has gone through a tremendous trial and God has placed Pastor Maldonado in this church to help take it out of it.  I believe the Lord will use this man and his family to help this church move forward.  On Saturday Pastor Maldonado drove me another three hours to the city of Dolega where I preached for the third time for another one of our missionaries, Pastor Rafael Rodríguez and the Lighthouse Bible Baptist Church in Dolega, Panama.  They celebrated their sixth anniversary and we had over 200 in attendance with 27 saved.  Then on Sunday night I preached for Pastor Byron Willis at the Bible Baptist Church in David, Panama.  What a great work this is!  I spoke for the teachers and workers before the service and preached the evening sermon.  Many decisions were made and no doubt God is using Pastor Willis to build a great work in this country.  Finally on Monday, September 26th I flew from David into Panama City on a domestic flight and Pastor Olivo picked me up at that airport and drove me to the international airport where I caught my flight to Miami and then to DFW.  After a long day flying I finally made it home by midnight.  It was good to be back home!

Preaching in Roma, TX/Predicando en Roma, TX

On Thursday, September 15, I flew to McAllen, TX.  Pastor Jorge Briones, from the Bible Baptist Church in Roma, TX came to pick me up.  I preached a two night missions’ conference in his church.  We had a tremendous time and the Lord really motivated this congregation to give more to missions.  Before I left, Pastor Briones took me to a spot on a hill near the church where I could see across the Rio Grande into the Mexican border and the city of Miguel Alemán.

Our church celebrates its 12th anniversary/Nuestra iglesia celebra su 12vo aniversario

On Sunday, September 11, our church celebrated its 12 years in existence.  Praise the Lord for that faithful group of people who decided with God’s help to begin a Spanish Independent Baptist Church on September 1999.  We had a great Sunday that day and although we didn’t have a big push for attendance (Our Fall Program begins on October 2) we still had a full house Sunday morning and night.  We gave away a key chain with the church’s name engraved to all present in church that day (adults and teens) and to the children we gave away a toy.  Then at night we had a special service with all of our music groups singing a special and after the service a big dinner and of course a beautifully decorated “Tres Leches” cake for dessert.  During the evening service everyone brought a gift for the church.  We have all Sunday school classes participate and our teachers help organize this and in the service all the classes march across the platform and put a gift on the table for the church.  Gifts of all kinds are brought, from things for the office, our vehicles, cleaning supplies, kitchen supplies, gift cards to different places where the church does business, to cash for special needs.  Congratulations Iglesia Bautista Fundamental on your 12th anniversary!

Preaching in Puerto Rico/Predicando en Puerto Rico

After being in Santo Domingo for 3 days, I flew on Monday, September 5, to my country, San Juan, Puerto Rico, to not only preach a conference, but also spend a couple of days relaxing with my beautiful wife who flew that Monday and met me there.  After I arrived on the Island the couple who picked me up, José Miguel and Elsita Rivera from the city of Fajardo, and I went out to eat and kill some time at the Plaza Las Americas Mall until my wife was to arrive later that evening.  She arrived around 6:30 pm that night and then we went to the Rio Mar Beach Resort in the city of Rio Grande where we stayed two days.  On Wednesday we left for Fajardo and stayed at Jose Miguel and Elsita’s home the rest of the time we were there.  I preached for Pastor Luis Martínez, from the First Baptist Church of Ceiba a three night revival conference.  The Lord met with us and as the Pastor said, “We heard from Heaven.”  Many decisions were made for His honor and glory.  I also had the opportunity to preach for a dear friend of the family of many years, Dr. Mike Casillas, Founder and President of the Puerto Rico Baptist College University in Bayamón.  It is also the place where the church I was saved on October, 20, 1974 is located.  It was a blessing for me to see again that precious building where the Lord saved this little boy who gave Him his heart at the age of 10.  I preached to the students in chapel and had a great time with them.  We had a great time visiting with friends and family and also do God’s work there.  Praise the Lord we were able to leave the Island and get back home before Tropical Storm “María” hit its shores.
